  1. Possibly. It could infer a color; umber has an earth pigment and umber hulks dig in the earth. Umber also comes from umbra, Latin for shadow. It’s a creature that digs in the earth and lives in the shadows? And this is a total stretch, but for me, the word conjures lumber, and I just always imagined an umber hulk as a large lumbering creature.

    I was reading about them on Wikipedia and apparently there is a freshwater aquatic version of an umber hulk called a vodyanoi. The pictures of vodyanoi online have a Lovecraftish feel to them.
