Another story in The Dark Descent anthology is Ellison's "The Whimper of Whipped Dogs" which is terrifying because it uses the best tool a writer has - the reader's imagination - for its horror..

Great review! Almost makes me want to read the stories...almost. Sci fi is not my genre of choice.

Nor am I a fan of the currently popular television fare that analyzes and probes the blood and gore of crime, a la CSI and the like. I prefer to hide in the safe and totally fictional world of little old ladies in pre-war England where the "body in the library" is treated as a delightful curiosity.
